Here’s something blue! Anya chose a handprinted navy blue wedding dress for her big day as she knew she didn’t want anything traditional. The dress she ended up with is a true reflection of her personality. It includes a quote from the couple’s favourite movie, Labyrinth. After deciding on the dress, Anya & Rob went with a celestial winter wedding theme that went perfectly with the blue and gold tones on the bespoke wedding dress. With DIY decor, sparklers, toasted marshmallows, and mulled cider, this wedding is a true winter wonderland. The amazing Recommended supplier, Alexa Poppe Wedding & Event Photography, captured the whole day!
Here's our advice, decide what you don't mind going wrong and then that way you don't have to worry about fixing it or stressing out over it on the day. DIY will take you three times as long as you think, and you may not finish every project. Include your partner in the decisions and make sure you're both on the same page. Google Docs are great reference points to make sure no one is duplicating! Book your big things, and have the budget strictly allocated for them put aside first. That way you know exactly how much is left for any unexpected add-ons.
Anya & Rob
Anya knew she didn't want a traditional white wedding dress, so she settled on a midnight navy blue wedding dress hand-painted by a Ukrainian designer. Anya & Rob also wanted to have subtle nods to their favourite geeky obsessions. They had Lego versions of themselves, a quote from Labyrinth on Anya's dress, and a first dance set to Mahna Mahna by Mah Nà Mah Nà and The Snowths (Yes, from The Muppets). For the reception entertainment, the couple chose to have eel throwing (which is from Ely Eel Festival - one of the couple's first dates), with mulled wine and cider on tap for the drinks. Almost all of the styling and decor was DIY'd by Anya.
The vibe Anya & Rob wanted was a mix of cosy winter and celestial. The colour palette was full of dark moody tones with gold highlights. After finding Anya's navy blue wedding dress, the couple made all their styling decisions based on the dress! There were certain things Anya & Rob knew they wanted to add cosy warmth to their day without having bright colours, so they used a lot of candlelight. The couple had a wedding scent with scented candles as part of the ceremony to invoke a particular sense of comfort. They finished the evening with toasted marshmallows to really make it extra cosy.
We lost our Maid of Honour unexpectedly a couple of months before the wedding, and Anya knew she couldn't face replacing her best friend on the day. We made sure she was present throughout the day - Anya carried a pin of her on her bouquet down the aisle, and Anya made sure she spent a quiet moment with her photo just before her father's first look and left her a seat open with the flower she would have carried.
