Since we’re halfway through the year, we thought it would be the perfect time to share our top 10 wedding themes of 2024 so far. Whether you’re dreaming of a celestial celebration under a starlit sky or a vibrant festival of love, this year’s themes offer something for every couple ready to make their day unforgettable. We’ve curated the ultimate guide to choosing your wedding theme. Now, we’re not saying that if you don’t choose one of these wedding themes you’re missing out, these themes are just some of the most popular that we’ve spotted in our real weddings so far this year, of which we’ve shared 178, but who’s counting?
Your wedding theme is the main central concept, colour palette or idea that informs the overall style of the wedding. Your wedding theme unifies the decor, outfits and dress codes, lighting, venue, flowers, cake and more. The wedding theme you choose should reflect your personalities, tastes, hobbies and more and it will influence every decision you make in the planning process including which photographer you choose to how many guests you want to have. Your wedding theme may evolve and change over time but usually, this is one of the first things you should think about besides booking your wedding venue. It helps to have one idea and stick with it so that you don’t get influenced by anyone else’s opinion.
How to choose a wedding theme?
We’ve put together a few things that you should consider before deciding on your wedding theme to really make sure you’ve found the right one. Though, we do not doubt that whichever theme you choose, your day will be beautiful and entirely unique to you.
1. Think about your personalities
Consider shared and individual interests, hobbies, passions and just general likes and dislikes. If you both love going to the beach, a coastal wedding could be a shout. At the same time, opting for a seaside theme menu could be another option.
2. Reflect on your venue
It goes without saying that the location and overall vibe of your wedding venue will have the greatest impact on your wedding theme. An industrial event space is great for a retro wedding whilst a rustic barn could suit a rootin’ tootin’ country theme. Get creative!
3. Consider the season
Seasonality also plays a large role in helping you decide your wedding theme. Summer and spring weddings may have a more botanical focus with lots of flowers and greenery. Venues with lots of natural lighting or an outdoor wedding may suit these seasons. Autumnal and winter weddings may have a more luxurious feeling with warm lighting and a focus on Halloween or Christmas decor.
4. Set and stick to your budget
Obviously, some theme ideas may be more affordable and more realistic to achieve than others but there’s always DIY! Try to be realistic and practical about what works for your budget and the timeframe you have. Discuss things with your partner to make sure you’re both getting your expectations on the same page.
5. Look for inspiration
Browse through our real weddings and editorial shoots for some more ideas. Check out social media (we couldn’t recommend Pinterest for this enough) to gather some ideas and see what sticks out to you the most. You might surprise yourself with new ideas and things you didn’t expect to like. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with ideas here, so take it slow and build your own wedding vision board. This is a great tool to share with suppliers down the line.
This theme can also be described as rustic glam or boho luxe. It’s about elevating classic rustic or boho weddings with colour and sparkles! Think personalised sunglasses, disco balls, sequin or embellished wedding dresses, and bright and bold flowers. These weddings also use a lot of flash photography for that glam night time look.
This theme is for those couples after a classic and elegant affair. Neutral colour palettes and more whimsical botanical flower arrangements are key here as well as soft and romantic lighting, makeup and loose, natural hairstyles. Plus, lots of champagne (the colour and the drink).
For those leaning towards an alternative and gothic aesthetic, this theme serves coffin-shaped wedding cakes, dark tassel banner signs with romantic quotes from literature, blood-red rose bouquets, skull decorations and, of course, lots of black!
Destination weddings are back better than ever this year with lots of couples seeking countries abroad to guarantee the sun. These offer the most sensational wedding photos, particularly during sunset and golden hour.
Some couples are planning their wedding around a bright and vibrant citrus colour scheme. Using lemon yellow, lime green, neon orange and watermelon pink, this theme is for couples who don’t shy away from a pop of colour. We’ve seen citrus-coloured alternative wedding dresses along with fruit table centrepieces (yes, like actual sliced and whole fruits), bright streamers, meadow aisle flowers and more.
Similar to the go big or go home stance on citrus colour schemes, maximalist weddings embrace the motto that yes, size does matter. It has extravagant altar decorations for epic photo backdrops, busy tablescapes, multiple wedding outfits including something with feathers or sequins for the reception (it’s a must-have), colourful wedding nails, and funky groom’s accessories. This wedding theme takes the approach that more is more.
Last year, we saw a big focus on vintage weddings with a lot of influence from the 70s and whilst that is still true, we are seeing more 80s trends coming back into style with a contemporary twist. Wedding dresses have big sleeves but they’re detachable, dresses are more playful with shorter lengths, retro wedding cakes certainly aren’t going anywhere and neither are those huge wedding bows!
Since outdoor weddings became so popular during the pandemic and the laws around legal outdoor ceremonies changed, couples now actually want to connect more with nature and have fun with it. Think wedding meets festival. Guests stay in tents, signage is rustic and wooden, there are carnival games for entertainment, decor consists of bunting and your wedding breakfast has an informal vibe with grazing tables, food vans or sharing platters.
Sustainability is still just as important as it always has been. Couples have been opting for an eco-conscious approach with lots of DIY, greenery and foliage decor, vegan wedding menus, and more natural styling with drapery biodegradable or plantable stationery.
Is your love one that’s been written in the stars? Perfect for couples that feel like they were always destined to be together, this celestial wedding theme makes use of a navy and gold or silver colour palette with, obviously, lots of stars across your wedding cake, stationery and signage, favours and even your wedding dress and accessories. You can reference astrology, and maybe even have a tarot reader for entertainment!
