How To Style Your Wedding Ring Stack

Photography by Sophie Alexandria Photography

Stacked wedding rings have become a major trend in wedding jewellery, offering a versatile and personalised approach to traditional wedding bands. When one wedding band isn’t enough, go for more! Mix and match various styles, metals, and gemstones, to create a unique and meaningful wedding ring stack that evolves over time. Whether you're looking to add sparkle to your engagement ring, commemorate special anniversary milestones, or simply express your individual style, stacked wedding rings provide endless possibilities. In this wedding ring stacking guide, we explore the latest trends, styling tips, and expert advice from Taylor & Hart to help you craft your ideal wedding ring stack.

Stacking wedding rings: expert tips & trends to build the perfect stack

What is a wedding ring stack?

A wedding ring stack is exactly what it sounds like - a nest of rings that sit stacked together on the traditional left ring finger. This usually includes a minimum of two rings with the engagement ring at the centre. Although, the order of this is totally customisable to the look you want to achieve.

What is the meaning behind stacked wedding rings?

A wedding ring stack is not only a fashion statement but a chance for the couple to create something sentimental and meaningful through their wedding jewellery. Your wedding rings are something you wear all the time (usually), so it’s important to create something you really love to look at!

You start with your engagement ring and, on your wedding day, you receive your wedding ring after. Then, you might choose to add to the stack over time for special milestones. For example, getting an eternity ring to celebrate an anniversary or a ring to acknowledge your growing family with their birthstone can be really special.

As Kate Earlam-Charnley, Design Director at Tayor & Hart says, "The ring you choose now you’ll love for sentimental reasons because it’s not entirely about the design itself. These rings become a symbol of your milestone moments, your love for your partner and your commitment to each other, and that’s what matters most."

Why should you choose to have stacking wedding rings?

Whilst marriage is all about committing to your partner forever, you don’t have to commit to one ring forever. Opting for a wedding ring stack is ideal for people who like to switch up their style. As much as we’ve spoken about the sentimental value of wedding ring stacking, it can also be as simple as feeling like your wedding rings just aren’t your style anymore! This is where you can really have fun customising your own stack!

Stacked wedding rings are also perfect for couples who like to throw tradition out the door and are looking for something a bit alternative. Although some very gorgeous and traditional looks can be created with stacking rings, the opportunity to play with ring settings, mixed metals and colourful gemstones is something worth trying. So, how do you build your wedding ring stack?

“What we love about this form of self-expression is that it allows the jewellery we wear to become something greater than a commodity: by embracing our own creative authority over the meaning of our rings, we create something authentic to us. It’s a chance to wear our values on our sleeve (or, on our hand).”

How to build the perfect wedding ring stack?

The first thing you want to consider when building your wedding ring stack is how many rings you’d like. There are no rules when it comes to this, so add as many or as little as you’d like! Too many rings may become cluttered and busy while too few rings or unintentional spacing can look awkward.

Once you’ve got this down and you know your ring size, you can decide on an overall theme for the stack. Start with your engagement ring stone shape and decide what might complement this. Experiment with metal colour and gemstone colours. Don’t be afraid to experiment with what you like, you might surprise yourself and fall in love with something unexpected!

Mixing Metals

Mixed metals are becoming more and more popular! However, caution is key here since harder metals will scratch softer metals, i.e. 14k rose gold with 18k white gold. Choosing complementary metals that won’t damage each other is important.

Choosing Gemstones

Creating a subtle contrast is the key to a beautiful wedding ring stack. While choosing the same gemstone colours will match and look cohesive, mixing in one or two different colours will enhance your ring stack and show off your personality. We LOVE the idea of using birthstones for something more personal, however, they’re not all suitable for everyday wear on the hand. It’s lucky sapphires come in every colour, right?! Or, Taylor & Hart offer to set a small gemstone inside the band of every ring so that it’s protected from potential knocks, scratches and damage but you can still include it in the design as a hidden little treasure, which makes it all the more special.

Band Style

Stacking rings with various widths and textures adds aesthetic appeal to your stack. If your engagement ring is on a thinner band and is in the centre, having a thicker band above and below the engagement ring could help emphasise your engagement ring’s stone.

Ring Settings

Certain edges, widths, and diamond shapes will match up better than others. You don’t want to stack ring designs that will rub against each other, potentially chipping any diamonds or scratching the metal. You also don’t want to choose designs that clash such as stacking too many statement pieces.

Stacking Order

Since the engagement ring is usually the biggest, it is the traditional centrepiece of any wedding ring stack. The wedding band and any other rings you might add to the stack are added to complement and highlight the engagement ring. However, as we’ve already said, there are no rules! If your wedding ring is the star of the show, perhaps put this in the centre instead.

"Choose a ring design that’s appropriate for your lifestyle. If you work in an office and are a delicate person, dainty, more ornate designs would be great for you. If you’re a more fast-paced or active person, a wider, plain polished band might be the way to go."

Kate Earlam-Charnley - Design Director at Taylor & Hart
