Photography by Anne Delamarre Photography

On the Day of the Dead, we are excited to present a Día de los Muertos-inspired wedding editorial, showcasing how this vibrant celebration of life and death can serve as a beautifully meaningful way to honour love and marriage. Rooted in the rich traditions of Mexican culture, Día de los Muertos reunites the living and the departed, making it a profound occasion to commit to a lifelong bond. Through this shoot, we aim to highlight not only the beauty of the holiday’s symbolism but also how its stunning decorations and intricate makeup can create a breathtakingly unique wedding celebration.

I wanted to make it simple with masses of flowers, like the hydrangeas on the couch for the ballroom scene and the cloud in front of the church. For the umbrella, it was an original idea to work with dianthus, THE Día de los Muertos flowers.

What is Día de los Muertos?

Día de los Muertos is a traditional Mexican holiday that celebrates the dead. Translated into ‘Day of the Dead’, this celebration takes place over two days on the 1st and 2nd November every year. Many families gather together and create ‘home altars’ to pay their respects to loved ones who have passed away. Prayers are said and the days are focused on remembering and reminiscing about the life of the dead along with offerings that allow the dead to visit. The traditions focus on celebration rather than mourning.

Château de Lavagnac, old castle ruins close in the South of France The team behind the shoot spent the entire day in the ruins of the ballroom and on the spooky staircase. To complement the ruins, the decor was on theme with diamante skulls, deep red hydrangeas and enchanting candlelight that added a stunning contrast in these pictures. The slightly wilted flowers are a beautiful detail that highlights the precipice of life and death that this traditional Mexican celebration focuses on.

We planned this editorial shoot in just a week with a modern Mexico gothic style as the main inspiration introduced by the hydrangeas.
