There's something undeniably magical about a summer wedding – the warmth of the sun, the gentle breeze, and the vibrant hues of the season all come together to create a picture-perfect celebration. And at the heart of this enchanting day stands the pièce de résistance: the wedding cake. Summer offers an array of delightful inspirations for your cake, from light and zesty citrus flavours to lush, floral decorations that echo the beauty of your surroundings. Whether you dream of a classic tiered masterpiece adorned with fresh berries, a naked cake with a rustic charm, or a modern confection with bold, tropical accents, we’re here to guide you through the sweetest summer wedding cake trends and ideas.
What are the most popular summer wedding cake designs? Bella & Bean Cake Design agrees that summer weddings allow you to fully embrace colour in your wedding cake design. Vibrancy is the theme for 2024, with hot pinks, raspberries and bright complementary tones making a playful appearance. Fresh florals are a super way of bringing this into your cake design, with a wonderful array of seasonal blooms at your disposal.
The classic floral approach is still so popular. Flowers are created from wafer paper or Peak Patisserie’s favourite, sugar flowers! These bring together the summer season and drama for a statement show-stopping wedding cake. Peak Patisserie highlights that, with limitations on the use of fresh flowers for food, handcrafted sugar flowers give the perfect opportunity to create stunning florals that could mirror your bouquet!
As well as handcrafted flowers such as wafer and sugar flowers, Flour and Fold claims that wildflower-pressed wedding cakes are as popular in summer as they are in springtime. These can be tailored to match your overall wedding colour scheme.
Summer is definitely all about fruity citrus flavours. Variations of the classic lemon cake remain popular because it has everything. It’s light, refreshing and a lovely palette cleanser after the wedding breakfast.
Bella and Bean Cake Design loves exotic flavours such as fresh Passionfruit & White Chocolate and Raspberry Rose & Pink Champagne!
Flour and Fold loves Raspberry & Rosewater, Coconut & Lime, and Pistachio, White Chocolate & Raspberry flavour combinations for summer.
Cherish Cakes by Katherine Edwards makes a delicious Lemon & Elderflower cake. The moist, lemony sponge is infused with elderflower syrup, filled with elderflower buttercream and a lovely lemon curd.
Sassy’s Sugar Doughnuts offer something a little different…doughnuts! For summer, sometimes a lighter treat might suit your wedding more than a slice of cake. Sassy’s summer doughnuts are either Belgian White Chocolate with Lemon or Raspberry flavours.
As mentioned, colourful and vibrant wedding cakes are super popular with retro wedding cakes still adding a fun kitsch look to the summer season. However, the Pantone Colour of the Year also fits the summer season so well! Peach cakes are perfect for summer…
TOP TIPS ON COORDINATING YOUR WEDDING CAKE WITH YOUR THEME
A focal point of your Reception, your cake is a unifying centrepiece that should reflect the different aspects of your day. We asked our expert cake makers what you should consider when designing your wedding cake. The first thing they unanimously agreed on was that you should have a design consultation with your chosen cake maker. This is the perfect time to discuss your likes and dislikes with cake inspiration, allowing your designer to get to know you in more detail. Your cake maker will draw inspiration from every detail, from the hues of your fabrics and the petals of your blooms. This way, personal touches can be incorporated to make your wedding cake extra special. Think personalised pet cake toppers, your birth flower as decoration etc.
Peak Patisserie has also said, “Many couples are now opting for a more minimal cake approach. They’ll use fresh flower displays around the cake table to create gorgeous centrepieces, with beautiful summer flower meadows or even flower crowns.”
Cherish Cakes by Katherine Edwards says, “It always makes a difference to think about the styling and positioning of the cake on the day to get that full wow factor! Neon signs, floral surroundings, and candles are just some ideas for creating an amazing cake display. I will often liaise with stylists, planners and florists in order to ensure the cake gets to be set up in the best way on the day.”
Tips on keeping your cake cool in hot weather
With summer weddings, especially destination weddings, it’s important to keep your wedding cake cool to avoid any meltdowns (literally). Usually, your cake maker will be transporting the cake and they’re experts in this. However, if you find that you’ll have to transport it yourself, then we recommend placing your cake in a cooler box (if it will fit) and surround it with ice packs. During the day, keep your wedding cake in a shaded place. Avoid any direct sunlight and try to showcase it in a place where there’s a cool breeze. If your wedding is outdoors, keeping a canopy over the cake is key. If your wedding is going to hit extreme heat temperatures (over 40°C), then keeping your cake in a fridge for as long as possible at your venue would be the best thing to do. If you’re planning a marquee wedding, investing in a mini fridge for your cake wouldn’t be the worst idea.
