Marnie & Gavin

Photography by Kate Waters Photography
This morning we're feeling ALL of the industrial vibes with Marnie and Gavin's stylish Sheffield wedding. The pair are both architecture graduates, so naturally their wedding is impeccably designed. They've also let the space do the talking - which can be a bold move, but when the space is as striking as 92 Burton Road - it totally pays off. Marnie looks amazing in Vera Wang which she found in a charity shop (!) in Norfolk. If there was ever a reason to head to Norfolk for a long weekend...this is it. Other gorgeous things to look out for - the rust coloured bridesmaids dresses, the stunning florals and the street food style dining. All in all, it's a pretty epic wedding! Let's take a look shall we?

The Bride

Marnie the Bride: I got really lucky with my dress! I knew from the onset that I didn’t want a traditional bridal dress but something more relaxed which I could have a good dance in. I stumbled upon my wedding dress in a small charity shop in Norwich whilst shopping with my sister. It was the first wedding dress I tried on but it felt so right that I had to buy it! I couldn’t believe my luck. My jewellery was by Dower and Hall, which my Mum had picked out for me at work. It was exactly what I was looking for, something simple but slightly bohemian.

The Groom

Gavin the Groom: I went shopping with Marnie’s Dad - a very fashionable guy – and he suggested I try on a suit at Hugo Boss just to see what it’s like at the high end. But I was completely sold. I had tried on so many other suits beforehand but none made me feel as different and as confident as the Hugo Slim fit suit. Plus I knew I’d wear it for interviews and other weddings so it was worth forking out the cash.

The Venue

We looked at A LOT of venues but knew as soon as we had stepped into 92 Burton Road that we’d found it. We were looking for somewhere different, fun and relaxed where we could throw a great party. As architecture graduates, we were both itching to start sketching out ideas of how we could decorate such an amazing space. The team at Burton Road were outstanding and became good friends of ours during the planning process. Nothing was ever too much to ask, from sending us crates of wine to sample to sorting out playlists for us, they had the whole lot covered. The venue brought our vision of having an industrial and wild Sheffield wedding to life. Our families decorated the venue the day before our wedding and it was such a great surprise arriving at the warehouse to see it all decorated. We have so many special memories from 92 Burton Road, from sipping cocktails with friends outside around fire pits, to our sparkler send-off at the end of the night.

The Decor

We wanted the colour scheme to compliment our wild theme and the industrial setting. We went with a mixture of green, burgundy, dusty pink, white and navy. We really enjoyed decorating the space and had a lot of Pinterest boards going on! We didn’t want to over-decorate the venue, as the old warehouse is a beautiful space in its own right. We wanted to create a wild look to complement the industrial. We draped ivy everywhere, around columns, along the tables and even down the aisle in the church. We filled the space with vintage artefacts, such as an old suitcase, small vintage bottles and a retro table football, to add to the rustic feel.

The Flowers

We chose a wild botanical theme to compliment the industrial warehouse reception. The flowers were a key aspect of our decorations and Emma at Moss and Clover worked her socks off to get the look just right. We had collected a variety of mis-matched vintage jars which were filled with a mix of wild flowers on the tables. Emma also decorated a large metal hoop at the venue with eucalyptus and wild flowers which brought the space to life. Marnie: I didn’t want to put the bouquet down all day! It was a low and wide bouquet with a mix of dusty pink roses, eucalyptus, gypsolthila, wax flowers, blue thistles and poppy heads. The bouquet was a real masterpiece, the perfect balance of wild and pretty. The bridesmaids carried small bunches of eucalyptus and wax flowers which looked great with the dresses.

The Wedding Party

The bridesmaids’ dresses were from ASOS which were great quality and affordable. The groomsmen wore a skinny navy suit from Burton to compliment the groom’s suit.

The Ceremony

It was really important to us that we got married at our church, St Thomas Crookes, in Sheffield. The church is home to us and where Marnie and I started our journey of faith together. We believe God is at the centre of our marriage and it was a real blessing to share our faith with family and friends.

The Transport

Phil, Marnie’s dad, treated us to two stunning vintage cars from Vintage Volksweddings. The driver was very sweet and gave us a bottle of champagne to celebrate on the journey to Whitley Woods where we had our woodland shots. The bridesmaids were spoilt with the campervan.

The Food & Drink

There was plenty of prosecco on arrival, which was served from the shipping container transformed by the Burton Road team into a cocktail bar. 92 Burton Road is the setting for the famous ‘Peddler Market’ in Sheffield so we decided it would be fun to carry on the theme and have street food. We tried Smokin Blues’ sandwiches in York Christmas market, as recommended by the venue team, and we fell in love with the menu. We wanted the meal to be a way for everyone to relax and socialise and the food was served on sharing platters so everyone could help themselves. Everyone LOVED the beef brisket. We overheard Marnie’s Gran gasping “how on earth do they cook beef like that?” With four tiers and four heavenly flavours topped with wild flowers and berries, we couldn’t have asked for a better wedding cake, and it didn’t last very long once it was cut! It was made by The Pink Cake Box, and it was such a tasty dessert. The tasting session months beforehand was a highlight of the wedding planning.

The Photography

Well what can we say about the lovely Kate. She was absolutely perfect. From efficiently arranging mass audiences for photos, to capturing the small fun moments without you realising, she was everything we were after. We first spotted her at one of our friend’s weddings and when we saw her photos we fell in love with her style and her soft filters. None of the images looked overly edited and had the natural feel we wanted. Only 4 weeks after the wedding we received a beautifully laser cut memory stick with 750 photos in. We received 50 of the highlights in the first week of our honeymoon! Words can’t describe how much we recommend this lady.

The Videography

Our very talented friend Mr Isaac Benjamin was our videographer and we are so excited to see it once the videos are complete. We looked at a few different videographers but Isaac’s style was faultless – not overly traditional or tacky, but very creative and thoughtful and he could capture the mood of each wedding effortlessly. He was a lot of fun during the couple shots and he brought along his very expensive drone for good measure.

Advice

Number 1. Trust your family and friends. Marnie’s Dad suggested that it would be fun if we didn’t see the venue before the big day. Our families decorated it together on the Friday whilst we were relaxing in the spa. It was such a great surprise and it looked even better than we imagined it. Trust the groomsmen too - they’ve got it all covered. Number 2. Don’t feel like you have to stick to conventions. We never planned to have a first dance so we strategically snuck off for some evening photos when the band started. When we were dancing later in the night, we naturally had a little ‘first dance’ when we were getting into the salsa. The spontaneity was way more fun! Number 3. Make sure you a grab a pint with your Dad. I never managed to get round to this but wished I had. I’ve heard from others that it is a memorable and very touching moment of your day.
