Chinese Couple Heritage Engagement Shoot

Photography by Bjymr8

How unbelievably beautiful is this Chinese couple during their engagement shoot? Leah & Justin first met in 2013, and their paths crossed for many years before they began dating. We absolutely love the history behind this photoshoot. They wore 漢服 (“Hanfu”) and experienced what would have been an afternoon shared by a married couple during the Jin dynasty. They also donned 1920’s Chinese western era clothing! Justin wore military attire, and Leah a 旗袍 (“qipao”) which originated as a modern adaptation from dresses in the Qing dynasty.

The western influence in China during the 1920s created an interesting juxtaposition of design. A blend of cultures which was also beautiful in its own way. It was fun to be able to experience a slice of both time periods.

I grew up watching Chinese soap operas with my parents - shows filled with fascinating history, beautiful architecture, design, and visuals from ancient Chinese dynasties. It’s still uncertain to me if it would truly be a life of happiness to be at the top or close to the top of command (the emperors could take on hundreds, if not thousands of concubines!). I definitely wouldn’t want to be anything close to the empress or a princess. The best place to be would probably be a high ranking official! But the beauty of the palaces and clothing is indisputable. The romance of an epic love during that time is still alluring. Justin and I had the opportunity to do something different for our engagement shoot, and get a small taste of how we would look and dress in that era!
